Georgie Girl
15 July 2006
Well, we certainly didn’t plan on moving this quickly, but I guess when you tell the Universe you’re ready you’d better mean it.
With Franny only gone a month—though of course he was two years in the going—we began to feel more than just the grief of his passing. There was a well-established void that we’d not really let ourselves acknowledge throughout Franny’s decline, probably because it was his decline that had caused the void. What I’m saying is this: entirely separate from our grief over Francis, we simply missed having a dog in our lives, and really had in many ways already begun feeling this some time ago, as Franny’s advanced age (and the loss of his eyesight, hearing, and mobility) and his diabetes (and the rather strict regimen his condition imposed on all of us) slowly and painfully drained him of the wonderful qualities that made Francis the amazing and unique dog he was for so many years.
So we started talking about when we might consider bringing a new dog into our lives (sooner rather than later), and what kind of dog (either a Corgi or some kind of Corgi mix), and where we might go to make this happen (we leaned heavily toward a rescue dog, and had vowed to steer well clear of any situation that even vaguely resembled a puppy-mill). Well, as Heather was cruising the various and sundry rescue websites (almost all of them hideously put together from a web design standpoint, btw) she came across “Marbella” at the Animal Rescue of Fresno web site, where she was described as a 9-month old Corgi mix.
Well, she was a mix alright, but if there’s Corgi in her then I’m part llama. What she looked to be, however, was part Basset hound and part Australian blue heeler (and who knows what else). The only thing we’re sure of is the Basset—her body, her walk, and her paws leave no doubt of that.
Anyway, we made a few phone calls and then stopped by ARF for a “visit” and left there new parents. And then we changed her name to Georgia, partially in honor of the young lady from ARF responsible for rescuing her from the local SPCA, who was going to euthanize her the very next day. So we’re now hoping she has a long and happy life ahead of her—we’ll certainly be doing what we can to make that happen.

He’s a cute little guy. Congratulations. We are anxious to meet him. Please feel free to bring him over to meet us and Sadie. T
